About
Liberation Learning is currently written by Tom Kertes, a child care worker and community organizer in Vancouver, B.C. For now, Liberation Learning shares Tom’s ideas and reflections, as well as resources, events and other points of views of interest to people connected to children and child care. Later, the site will expand to include many voices and perspectives from throughout the entire child care workforce in British Columbia.
Liberation Learning Project
The Liberation Learning Project will connect child care workers to each other and the rest of the community, as effective community leaders and media makers. A project in the making, once fully launched the LiberationLearning.com blog will shift to become a platform for child care workers to express a range of ideas and views, including on topics such as the politics and economics of child care, women’s equity and work, human rights for all, and the interests and values of First Nations families, children and communities.
The project will proceed in stages and will eventually include the following core activities:
- Develop child care workers as leading media makers to share untold stories and build power for the purpose of supporting all B.C.’s children and families.
- Develop new media platforms and networks connecting child care workers with each other and the whole community.
- Develop and share thoughtful analysis about the politics and economics of child care in our community.
Child care workers include everyone whose work contributes to the well-being and care of children. This includes both unpaid and underpaid care providers, such as parents, grandparents, nannies, daycare workers, preschool teachers, librarians, friends and neighbours.
We already know how much families value child care. The Liberation Learning Project will help communities better understand how to bridge the gap between the high value placed on child care and the reality of inadequate supports available to most B.C. families.
